Lately it seems like everyone, myself included, can’t stop talking about Downton Abbey. Every week I wait expectantly for Sunday. I don’t want to miss a minute of the drama, the romance, the betrayals – or the furniture.I like to think of Downton Abbey as a sort of extended Apartment Therapy house tour, where we get to know the inhabitants very well. Sometimes I’ll rewind, not to catch a line I missed, but to get a better look at the interiors.

On the first floor of David Garrick's town house, the drawing room, the grandest in the house, was at the front overlooking the Thames and was the full width of the house. Behind this were the staircase and a short passage which led to the bed chamber behind. It may seem odd to us but bed rooms were more public than they are in modern houses and visitors would view the grand bed and furnishings in them.
