CALL THE COPS! Freebie Poster for Writing

Hey friends! At this point in the kindergarten year we are encouraging our kiddos to write three or more sentences about the same topic, using punctuation, finger spaces, capital letters and neat handwriting. This getting ready for first grade business is tough for them, so these COPS reminders will hopefully help! They are also appropriate for first, second and third grade when students need to start using more transition words, outlines and organization in their writing. Since I love when…

4 Types of Sentences flip book...and snow!

My students were giddy this morning when everyone woke up to the first snow of the season here in Kansas! It wasn't much, but enough to get everyone excited. So when we did this little activity about the 4 types of sentences today, (declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, & imperative) we wrote our 4 sentences about snow! 4 Types of Sentences flip book! I introduced the 4 types and then the students put the flip book together. Under each flap they wrote that type of sentence. One of my…

The First Grade Parade

It's almost time for our family elf, Elfabet, to visit us from the North Pole. He is one of my favorite family traditions because his silly hijinx always make my boys laugh. There is just no sweeter sound to wake up to in the morning, I swear. Not only are the elves flying back to homes everywhere across the country, but according to my calendar, they're flying back to classrooms everywhere, too. Here's a peek back at our visit from our classroom elf a few years ago. A special delivery…

He Brought it Upon Himself to Visit...

Strep Throat that is. Insert frustrated, exhausted teacher here. Thursday I was exhausted all day, but I made it through the day. Friday I woke up feeling a little horrible, but I thought it's Friday, I'll make it. Plus it's so exhausting to make sub plans and get things ready, especially for a Friday. By roughly 2:00ish I was near death. I made it through math games, then while my kiddos were at their specials for the day I really went downhill. I ran outta school as soon as the kids were…

Poetry Power

Hello Everyone! Happy April! Poetry Month!! We are feeling so great!! We have poetry power! My kiddos became poets today! After gleaning inspiration from one of my favorite literacy guru's, Regie Routman, we made an anchor chart describing what poetry can help us do and what we already know about poetry. Poetry is "Powerful Points in Puny Packages!" Then I decided to let the kids "have-a-go" with writing their first poems. Our inspiration? Spring and "list poems." We brainstormed as many…
