Close reading requires a different mental construct toward literacy instruction than does strategy-based instruction. A clear and comprehensive plan was needed to “manage the struggle” of the adults as they shifted in practice (and by the way they did not shift.) Some considerations in the plan could have been: What model of close reading will we embrace? What will the progression look like throughout the year? What are the opportunities for close reading in other content area classes?
