Aurora - Nutirwik Creek, Brooks Range, Alaska

A magnificent aurora, its shape reminiscent of a tulip, is reflected by the frozen surface of Nutirwik Creek, in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska, on the evening of March 20, 2015. Aurora occur when fast-moving charged particles from the sun are directed by the Earth's magnetic field to the polar regions, where they strike molecules in the atmosphere and cause them to emit light.
