Pool Noodle drill: Bat Path | Have you ever wondered what hitting guys mean when they say “bat path”? So what does it mean? Bat path is the path the barrel travels going into, thru,... | By Hitting Links | Of the things that I like to do is kind of check your adjustability. How that would work in the swing and kind of get a preview of your swing plan. So, one of the things that we do is we just put a cone, cut a little hole in it, just big enough to kind of get the handle fitting in it and now, we just make this an extension of this front arm bone and you can start to see exactly what happens when guys get a little top hand dominant and where the barrel actually starts to head. So, I'm going to show you by just looking at this pitch right now. So, a pitch that's up and and how to get in a position for the first third of the swing to make yourself get on plane and do it for every pitch in the quadrant and I think that's the most important things is is learning how to get to every pitch in this quadrant from the very first third of the swing no matter what the location. So, let's just kind of get into this. So, we have this. It's just kind of giving us our that bow and this is how you're going to find the ball. So, if I was going to go after this pitch, my very first move would have to be slotting, stacking up which is elbow moving this way, bat moving to my shoulder, right? So, you can start to see the closure and gap between my bat and my shoulder. It may not be where it started but it's always going to be here, okay? So, now in that first start of the swing, I've picked my height and now with my spine and now I'm working I'm working through it okay so this is an important thing to to to really understand and so here's what happens when that first third of the swing is off okay so and there's no adjustability and I'll show you what I mean so if if my very first swing and my first move isn't here but it's already to start the barrel this little move right here makes me not be able to adjust okay so now I start throw my hands but what if that's the pitch watch what happens I can't I've already disconnected this from my body and start to swing so if it's any has any movement on it you're going to try to fight to get to it and now look where my bat goes my bat has to get out of the way I have to use my top hand to go find it and now I'm going in a downward position to try to go find the ball so here's what happens when you get to the first 30 of your swing no matter where the pitch is you're still adjustable so if I'm going to hit this pitch unless this is extreme. You know, a lot not all our balls are going to go from here to there but they will. So, let's just think about what the front arm's going to do. So, if I if I pick this position that I'm slotting, the adjustability to get my bat on playing is still there. It's still there. So, now, I'm back behind it and I can still get through it. Same same exact swing, okay? So, I don't have to change my hands. So, as soon as you see this, This move and the bat head starts to go, you start to see, you can see your bat head and then get a preview of it going down to the ball and it's already starting to make its move. Now, if it's up, you can't recover. There's no recovery because then your top hand has to do all the work. You're no longer hitting with your front side. So, this is a good way to get a good indicator on how the front arm actually works to get to the ball and then you go from there. So, we should be able to go to an extreme, right? So, in the first third of our swing, we can start slotting, get on plane, and start making my hands going the direction I want to go, right? So, that's where we're going to end up going, now look at the same swing. So, I'm still going to get to the first third of my swing only instead of throwing my hands here, I'm going to make sure that I keep moving my barrel and my body in the position that gets me on plane and then gets me it and through it. So, posture, positioning, it's all the same. The only thing that's happening is is I'm making some small adjustments here and it's the the the adjustments through the front arm are minimal and I see a lot of guys trying to make this via move. This doesn't work, right? And so we have to think, this is the bone we use. So, when I go to, when I go to swing, if I start turning that bone down, I have to physically start going in this direction to make myself go down there and I see a lot of guys do this. The best hitters keeping this bone facing home plate so it's a simplify movement to get to this position, right? So, if it's a high pitch, we just go to here. Bang. Alright? If it's a low pitch, we just make ourselves pinch in and then we can start to go this way, okay? So, I think this is a good tool for guys to to kind of see their path and get an understanding of what is happening by previewing the barrel before it happens and you can really see when kids are top-hand dominant, they may think they're there and then all of a sudden, there goes the barrel and they lose So, I like this drill for kids to get a good visual.
