Astrantias offer a great deal of subtle beauty. The tiny central flowers are surrounded by bracts that range in color from chartreuse to deep red, depending on the variety. Flowers are held atop strong slender 24"-32" stems and persist for several weeks in late spring and early summer. They are exceptionally long lasting as a cut flower. The glossy foliage is mostly basal and is attractive throughout the growing season. Astrantia thrives in rich soil in partial shade.
Veronica ‘Giles Van Hees’ is a hardy Zone 4 plant, suitable just about anywhere in our northeastern USA. It is an easy and reliable grower that thrives in a sunny to partially shaded location in any well-drained soil. We recommend improving the soil at planting time by adding extra organic material. This will encourage quick root development and help to keep it growing and flowering well. Water after planting, and then occasionally if the soil dries out. More at: www.gardensplendor.com
