News - Hubble Space Telescope Celebrates 25 Years of Unveiling the Universe
Star-forming region Westerlund 2 captured by Hubble for the 25th anniversary of the Hubble's launch on April 24, 1990. Located 20,000 light-yrs away, strong winds and radiation from have sculpted the region's gas and dust, into pillars that point back to the central cluster. Red dots surrounding the bright stars are the cluster's faint newborn stars, still in their natal gas and dust cocoons. Many of the bright blue stars are not part of the cluster, instead lie in the foreground field of vi...
This dramatic image offers a peek inside a cavern of roiling dust and gas where thousands of stars are forming. The image, taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, represents the sharpest view ever taken of this region, called the Orion Nebula. More than 3,000 stars of various sizes appear in this image. Some of them have never been seen in visible light. These stars reside in a dramatic dust-and-gas landscape of plateaus, mountains, and valleys...
Astronomers have found a spiral galaxy that may be spinning to the beat of a different cosmic drummer. To the surprise of astronomers, the galaxy, called NGC 4622, appears to be rotating in the opposite direction to what they expected. Pictures by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope helped astronomers determine that the galaxy may be spinning clockwise by showing which side of the galaxy is closer to Earth.
