Carolinian Grief Mason, 21, was bludgeoned to death with a rifle butt in a field near Spotsylvania, Va., by Pennsylvanian Stephen Rought, 22, the Union soldier determined to get the regimental flag Mason carried at any cost on May 5, 1864. Rought won the Congressional Medal of Honor, while Mason would be buried in an unmarked grave.

During this assault (Pickett's Charge) the 5th Battalion was in Archer's Brigade commanded at that point by Colonel Burkett Davenport Fry, 13th Alabama Infantry.
