Richard Wagner (1813–1883). German composer, and conductor. Wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage and revolutionised opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts. He realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the cycle "Der Ring des Nibelungen". His compositions are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the use of leitmotifs.

Astonishingly, Wagner showed little aptitude or enthusiasm for music as a child, and so was the only one of his siblings to not receive piano lessons. When he was just 13, though, he wrote a play entitled 'Leubald' that he insisted should be set to music - which is when he started music lessons.
