Drowning Girl - 21.75x22 image on 26x23 Premium Paper

© Roy Lichtenstein About the ArtistKnown for his interpretation of the subjects and commercial style of cartoons and advertising, Lichtenstein launched the Pop Art movement of the 1960’s by bringing popular culture into fine art. He initially took his subject matter from True Romance and Adventure comics, as well as the Yellow Pages. His bold outlines, vivid colors, stylized forms and signature Benday dots simulated mechanical reproduction techniques. Born in New York in 1923, he studied under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in New York, before completing his Master’s degree at Ohio State University. Back in New York, he worked as a commercial artist and designer and did display work for shop windows. His paintings and drawings at this time were parodies of American art of the 1920’s. His one-man exhibit at the influential Leo Castelli Gallery in 1965 helped establish his position as one of the founders of Pop Art. There have been many retrospective shows of his work, one of which toured the USA, Europe and Japan in 1981. His wry personality seemed to be reflected in his humorous appropriation of "low-art" subjects.

Lichtenstein (Basic Art Series 2.0)

Author: Hendrickson, JanisBrand: TaschenFeatures: TaschenBinding: HardcoverFormat: Download: Adobe ReaderNumber Of Pages: 96Release Date: 31-05-2016Details: Product Description American painter Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) pioneered a new epoch in American art, bursting onto a scene dominated by Abstract Expressionism in late 1950s New York and defining a new art vocabulary for a new era. With his groundbreaking use of industrial production techniques and trivial, quotidian imagery such as cartoons, comic strips, and advertising, Lichtenstein joined contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist to reflect and satirize American mass media and consumer culture. Works such as Look, Mickey! (1961), Drowning Girl (1963), and Whaam! (1963) deployed mass production techniques, particularly Ben-Day dots printing, to create a blow-up effect and pixelated “dot” style, with which Lichtenstein has become synonymous. This book provides an essential overview of Lichtenstein’s career, tracing his earliest Pop statements through to later “brushstroke” retorts to Abstract Expressionism and reinterpretations of modern masterpieces. We look at his leading position in midcentury modernism, and the ways in which his works both critique and chronicle 20th-century America. About the series Born back in 1985, the Basic Art Series has evolved into the best-selling art book collection ever published. Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions About the Author Janis Hendrickson studied art history at Smith College and gained her doctorate in Hamburg under Martin Warnke.
