Dozens of educators who competed alongside Christa McAuliffe to become the first teacher in space gathered Thursday to remember the seven astronauts who perished aboard Challenger 30 years ago.

Sunday marks the 32nd anniversary of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, which killed all seven crew members, including New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.

The US space programme suffered its greatest loss of life when Challenger - with the first 'civilian' astronaut on board - disintegrated 73 seconds into its flight.
