“The Ultrasuede shirtdress [will] forever be known as Halston’s most famous single design. The shirt-waist dress, inspired by a man’s long sleeved shirt, was made remarkable because of his choice of the new fabric. Halston saw the fabric for the first time in 1971, worn by the famous fashion designer Issey Miyake, and, thinking it was waterproof, used it to make raincoats. When he realized that the fabric absorbed water instead of repelling it, the shirtwaist dress was born.”
