This rather strange grave brings many visitors to Malew Churchyard and as can be seen by the image it is iron staked at each corner and randomly heavily chained to keep the vampire in! The Vampire was a Mr Halsall who died aged 54, when he died the Undertakers were not allowed to bring his body onto the consecrated church grounds so rumour has it that they loaded his body into the grave from behind the wall, it was then covered in a heavy slate slab and staked with iron posts and iron chains.
According to the book Historic Natchez City Cemetery, Louise was a prostitute who worked in a brothel down Under the Hill after the Civil War. Many colorful stories about the poor girl; that she had become stranded in Natchez and was forced into prostitution just to survive, or that her fiancée abandoned her in town without any means to get by. When she died of tuberculosis the doc who treated her or the plantation owner who frequented her, paid for her burial.

Deep in grief, her hubby said “if your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” He opened the door & she was there, very much alive. He fainted dead away.
