Help students revise their writing at a deeper level using revision guides! For example, to help kids think about organization, ask… * What organizational structure did the writer use? * Are the ideas easy to follow or does the reader get lost? * Can you find some meaningful transitions that connect ideas and help the writing flow? These questions require students to hunt back in the text and find evidence, and that’s the difference between thoughtful revision and just looking at a rubric. Revising Strategy for Expository Writing
This Cut-it-Up strategy is one of my favorite strategies for revising for organization. I’ve used it successfully with kids (and adults) starting in second grade! It helps kids organize, see what’s missing and what still needs to be developed! For example, this piece about chameleons has uneven development (needs more details in some paragraphs) and it’s missing an introduction/hook and a conclusion! It's part of the Expository Writing Intervention Toolkit for third, fourth, and fifth grade.
