Union Pacific 942 in the barn - HDR

A wide-angle HDR image of legendary Union Pacific diesel locomotive 942 as she sits awaiting another run in Barn #4 at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris, California. According to the OERM.org website, she was built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors Corp. in May 1953, and was eventually upgraded to 2,400 horsepower. Notably, she was one of several engines to pull the famous streamliner "City of Los Angeles" on runs between Chicago and Los Angeles, carrying…

Victorian Railways, Train Crash, Melbourne 1988

Scanned the negative in for this recently. One of those wtf moments. Walking through a Melbourne suburb back in 1988 I stumbled on this scene. Someone had bought the front of a S Class Diesel locomotive from Victorian Railways (I just googled that bit), put it in their front garden and arranged the roof and the wall to look like it had smashed through their front living room. 10/10 for effort!

Two up-to-date Milwaukee Road streamlined trains in 1950 at Milwaukee, WI. At left, a streamlined steam locomotive, its design influenced by Otto Kuhler, stands ready to take a local train to Madison out of the station. The design was introduced for the Hiawatha in 1935 and quickly boosted ridership to the point where larger locomotives were needed to pull the longer trains. In the center, a Sky Top Lounge brings up the rear of a Hiawatha ready for a fast trip to Chicago.

Olympian Hiawatha

The Olympian Hiawatha was the CMStP&P's home-built streamliner that connected Chicago and Seattle debuting in 1947. The most exotic Northwest streamliner the railroad canceled it early in 1961.
