Celebrating our craggy rock friend on ‪#‎MoonDay‬! This image from an 1874 book by James Nasmyth and James Carpenter, appears to be the actual moon, but in the 1870s there wasn’t a photographic process that could capture the lunar surface with this much detail and clarity. Nasmyth and Carpenter built plaster models based on their observations and lit them with raking light to produce detailed illustrations for their book.
