Chirashizushi can be eaten at any time of year, but it is most commonly eaten annually on Hinamatsuri (雛祭り), which is in March. Hinamatsuri is the Doll’s festival or Girls’ Day, and so on this occasion the rice is often decorated with pink toppings, such as in the picture above. Around the time of hinamatsuri it is possible to buy specially decorated chirashizushi in the supermarket or convenience store.
