The Vulcan held the record for the longest bombing mission when it bombed the runway on the Falkland Islands after the Argentine invasion in 1982, a return journey of nearly 8,000 nautical miles. The mission was known as 'Black Buck One' and took almost 16 hours.

At the end of April 1982, three of Waddington's Vulcans had deployed to Ascension Island and on 1st May, a single Vulcan (supported by 13 Victor tankers) attacked the Argentinian held airfield at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.
