Having successfully completed his march to the sea by capturing Savannah in December of 1864, Union Major General William Tecumseh Sherman planned his invasion of South Carolina. His target was Columbia, the state capital where the secession movement began and considered by his generals to be a more important capture than any in the South. Re-trace Sherman’s path into Columbia, stand where he stood, walk the same streets, see the preserved ruins and visit the structures spared a fiery death. It was the only church to escape destruction in Harpers Ferry during the Civil War. Confederate Cemetery at Carlton Plantation in TN. Battle of Franklin. The soldiers were cared for & mourned over by Carrie McGavick, The Widow of the South.  Great Uncle William Munroe, of 24th Alabama Infantry died here & was buried somewhere on the grounds. We have Great-Grandfather's letters describing it. He returned after the war to bring his bro home & wasn't able to find his grave, even though the last time he had seen it he found that Masons had erected a marker & iron fence around it.
